ORG CONSULTING REVIEW

As the leader of an LGBTQ+ nonprofit organization, I had the opportunity to work with Shannon Cumberbatch in several different capacities. I attended and participated in several anti-oppression workshops that she facilitated, which were masterfully designed and impactfully delivered. Shannon brings a wealth of lived and professional experiences to her trainings, and provides both an important analytical framework and very practical recommendations - which was extremely helpful to me. I also worked with Shannon as a consultant, where she provided both legal and HR expertise to advise me on several complex and sensitive situations - which was invaluable to me. I would highly recommend working with her - you and your organization will be better for it.

“Shannon is one of the most brilliant people I've had the opportunity to work with, bringing so many different lenses and skillsets.”

Promoting Wellness in the Workplace

  • We’ll discuss some of the ways ableism and inequity are inherent to racial capitalism, ingrained in workplace performance expectations, and erodes the health and wellness of all, especially those most directly impacted by the work. We identify institutional and individual practices we can implement to improve wellness in the workplace instead of accelerate burnout while managing high volume triage work. We’ll close with mindful movement and meditation practices to help sustain us through our workdays.

Challenging Convention to Promote Equity Series

  • This series of workshops unearths the oppressive roots of common conventions organizations inherit under racial capitalism and equips participants with equitable alternatives. This series provides tools to transform practices and processes related to leadership, recruiting & hiring, supervision, conflict and office culture.

Leading Towards Liberation Series

  • Together we release ideas of leadership rooted in hierarchy, individualism, competition, surveillance, and control to develop more conscious and caring practices that can lead towards our collective liberation.

Confronting Workplace Harm

  • We help workers develop principled approaches to disrupting harm they experience and observe in the workplace. Likewise, we help leadership and administrators develop principled approaches to addressing workplace harm, while navigating relevant law.

Unlearning the Non-Profit Industrial Complex

  • This series urges individuals and institutions to unlearn conditioning and end our complicity in the paternalism, saviorism, and exploitation ingrained in the non-profit industrial complex, while supporting instead of sanitizing and co-opt grassroots movements.

Engaging Community with Cultural Consciousness & Care

  • We help direct service providers divest from paternalistic perspectives and harmful practices that perpetuate the same inequities and oppressive conditions they claim to challenge.

Unearthing the Oppressive Roots of the American Legal System

  • This curriculum unearths the role of the law in creating, codifying and perpetuating oppressive ideologies and institutions. We explore how interlocking family, immigration, criminal and civil legal systems borne out of these rotten roots reinforce their oppressive origins and harm people ensnared in them.

Dialogue on Culturally Conscious Direct Representation

  • Attorneys and advocates should be learning directly from the people we represent. In this dialogue, Mr. Carridice and I will discuss the nuances of race, class, power, privilege and injustice that arose from the moment of his violent arrest, through his three year journey to acquittal at trial. As Mr. Carridice shares his experience navigating inequitable power dynamics with judges, attorneys and supervisors in the criminal system, I will offer a legal and systemic analysis that contextualizes his experiences. Together, we'll offer insights and strategies to effectively advocate against oppressive harm while providing culturally conscious direct representation.

WORKSHOP & TRAINING REVIEW

“Perhaps most impressively, Shannon narrowly tailored the presentation to account for our work in the civil rights space, and used examples and fact patterns that were directly relevant to our day-to-day work.”

Our firm had a fantastic experience working with Shannon. We are a small civil rights firm, and Shannon facilitated a half-day workshop that focused on Uprooting White Supremacy in the Workplace and Culturally Conscious Direct Representation. It was a two-part presentation that addressed interactions both in the office (including with colleagues, the court, etc.) and with our clients. The sessions were interactive and engaging - Shannon was able to share her tremendous expertise while simultaneously facilitating robust and respectful group discussion. I highly recommend Shannon for any organization, and I know our firm will look to her again and again! - Alanna Kaufman

  • We encourage institutions to ensure that equity is an inherent part of everything they do, rather than an isolated DEI initiative. It’s even more urgent and imperative that we advance equity and challenge oppression when related rights and education is under attack. Together we anticipate potential liabilities and develop creative strategies to mitigate exposure while resisting regression.
